From the Reno Gazette Journal: As two single-engine air tankers and a Nevada Division of Forestry helicopter dropped flame retardant on the Pinehaven Fire on Monday, Washoe County’s RAVEN helicopter with its 300-gallon water tank was grounded at the Stead Airport and unable to help.
The call not to use the helicopter, which has already fought 23 wildland fires since early 2011, was made by a Reno fire official during the initial stages of the fire as it raged in west Reno. The problem wasn’t the Regional Aviation Enforcement Unit helicopter’s ability to fight the fire, nor a lack of trust in the crew’s ability to battle the blaze.
Instead, the Washoe County Sheriff’s helicopter is not sanctioned by the federal government to fly over U.S. Forest Service land, which was also burning as part of the Pinehaven Fire on Monday.
“We are not carded; in other words, the ship is not authorized for flying into forest service land for the purpose of fighting fires,” said Sheriff Mike Haley on Monday, calling the situation an unresolved jurisdictional question between local and federal governments.

From the RGJ: Lawyers for the trucking company involved in the deadly Amtrak train crash near Reno last year claim Union Pacific Railroad intentionally tampered with or destroyed evidence that could have shown the crossing gate malfunctioned and did not warn the driver of the oncoming train.Steve Jaffe, lawyer for John Davis Trucking, filed a motion Tuesday asking a federal judge to dismiss lawsuits filed by Amtrak and Union Pacific because instead of “preserving evidence,” they allegedly removed the crossing gate that was in the crash, making it difficult for the trucking company to defend itself against claims the driver was at fault.
Union Pacific had claimed that it left the crash gate in place so that it could be inspected by lawyers involved in several lawsuits. But Jaffe said photographic evidence shows that in the weeks following the crash, Union Pacific first cut the tip off the gate and threw away and then replaced the entire arm, leaving the trucking company without key evidence, Jaffe said in the motion.

All this time, it was assumed that the driver was completely at fault because all of the information has come from Amtrak and Union Pacific, along with the NTSB and NHP.
But if the facts are true that the gate was acting improperly, this may cause some, not all, of the blame to UP and Amtrak.
And if the evidence was destroyed as the defense lawyer has claimed, then we are talking about a huge scandal between UP and the Feds.

A fire that caused $150,000 in damage and displaced a family of five in the southwest valley Tuesday night started after a teenager played with fireworks in the home, Clark County officials said.
Clark County firefighters responded to the blaze at a two-story home at 10437 Mulvaney Circle, near Cactus Avenue and Interstate 15. The fire was knocked down by 7:18 p.m.
Fire officials deemed the blaze accidental and attributed it to "careless misuse of fireworks." Flames damaged the second floor and roof of the home.
