It used to be, when there was a strike, many people, including customers, refused to cross the picket line.  Not any more.
From the San Fran Chronicle: For 23 years, Eddie Silva has bagged, stocked, and sold groceries at Raley's and Nob Hill Foods grocery stores around the Bay Area.
On Sunday, the 45-year-old hoisted a picket sign for the first time outside his Alameda store, joining union members who went on strike chain-wide around 2:30 a.m. after efforts to reach a new contract with Raley's failed.
 John Segale, a Raley's spokesman, said the privately owned chain needs to reduce overhead costs at a time when nonunionized competitors such as Walmart stores are expanding. Segale said that since Raley's negotiated the union's last contract in 2008, about 240 nonunion retail companies that sell groceries have opened or increased their workforce.
"Those 240 stores are one of the main reasons we have got to stay more competitive," Segale said. "We absolutely have to reduce our costs."
The two sides have been negotiating for 15 months, and a federal mediator has been involved in recent weeks, union officials said.
About 40 workers picketed the Nob Hill Foods in Alameda on Sunday, asking customers entering the store to support their efforts.
At least seven employees had crossed the picket line, said Angela Willmes, a representative of the United Food and Commercial Workers.
Some customers turned around at the sight of the strikers, and others begged forgiveness while they offered apologies as they slid by the workers. "I'm only here for one thing" was a common explanation.
Tracy Gonzalez, 28, left the store with a case of Budweiser in each hand, trying to return home before the second half of the Raiders game started.
"This is my local store, so I want these people treated right," she said. "But at the end of the day, I still need my groceries. So I hope it all gets worked out soon."
